Interview Process - candidate documentation preparation
Please see an outline below of how the interview is structured and what you would need to bring along on the day.
Applicants who are invited to interview will need to download a copy of the Portfolio Cover Sheet at the end of this page.
In all cases interviews will last for no less than 30 minutes and will comprise 3 x 10 minute interview stations.

If you are called in for an interview, you will be required to bring the following documentation.
Please note: There is a risk that an interview will not be allowed to take place if the correct documentation is not produced.
- Portfolio, with cover sheet (see end of page for download) (including current curriculum vitae) (see also the Portfolio section lower down the page)
- Completed Clinical Oncology Portfolio Cover Sheet, downloadable from this page (NB: this is not required for Medical Oncology)
- Two passport photographs taken within the last 6 months (name and GMC number on back)
- Original current GMC Proof of Registration or GMC retention notice plus two copies
- Original primary qualification certificate plus one copy
- Original postgraduate qualification certificate plus one copy (where applicable)
- One copy of 'other' qualifications (where applicable- see person spec)
- Original passport and one copy of the front cover, inside cover and signature / photograph page.
- Original and a copy of your IELTS Exam results (including date taken), if applicable.
- Original Certificate C or Core Medical Training competences (where applicable) and one copy.
- Confirmation of completion of CT1 year (where you are currently completing CT2)
- ARCP/RITA for CT1/CT2 plus one copy
- Original MRCP Full Membership certificate or of completed parts plus one copy
- If you have NOT completed Full Membership of MRCP please bring proof of future exam dates booked. Failure to bring proof of dates booked could mean you may not be interviewed on the day.
- A reference from the each of the three referees outlined in the Pathway online application form (3 x reference reports in total) (see References section further down for guidance).
- Proof of address 2 forms of personal ID (Passport, Driving Licence or ID Card) and 1 document confirming address (recent utility bill or bank statement dated within past 3 months) Or 1 form of Photo ID (Passport, Driving Licence or ID Card) and 2 documents confirming your address (recent utility bills or bank statement dated within past 3 months)
If applicants are not from the UK/EEA, then the following papers should also be presented:
- Two copies of visa status page in passport
- HSMP only – original letter from the Home Office and two copies.
Where applicable - copies of documentation must be made prior to your attendance to interview. We will not be able to make copies on the day of interview.
Your portfolio is scored at interview and examined by panel members and will also contribute to the interview discussion. You are strongly advised to ensure that it contains relevant evidence of academic achievement, attainment of Foundation and core and Higher Specialty competences and of key activities which you have undertaken in the workplace or within the community which demonstrate your strengths as a doctor and manager of people.
You will be asked to refer to items within your portfolio at interview so make sure you are able to quickly access these and discuss, particulary audits and research examples.
Although many trainees are now using e-Portfolio, hard copy portfolios which contain evidence of information contained within the e-Portfolio are needed for interview.
The list below highlights some important and recommended approaches to portfolio management and presentation:
- Use one lever arch file for all your documents
- Place index in the front of your folder
- Include a printed copy of your application form (you may wish to exclude the sections relating to equal opportunities)
- Use marker tabs so that sections can be found quickly
- If you use plastic wallets make sure documents can be easily removed and examined as panel members will want to review them
- Don’t put in things that are not yours (e.g. someone else’s work or hospital guidelines)
- This is an opportunity to display your presentation and organisational skills
- F2 graduates – bring Foundation training portfolios or evidence of having completed educationally approved Senior House Officer, specialty training or fixed term specialty training (FTSTA) post(s) in the UK
- Evidence that you are on tract to gain your core competences.
- Documents on any audits (print outs of PowerPoint)
- Reprints/photocopies of any published research
- Checklist of competences achieved, countersigned by trainer
- Any other documents that provide evidence of competences
- Assessments by trainer/ educational supervisor
- Print outs from e-portfolio of workplace assessments, eg min-PAT, mini-CEX, CbD, and DOPS.
- MSF summary overview (including full details of MSF outcome)
- Candidates are required to bring along a reference report from each of the three referees outlined in the Pathway online application form.
- The three referees must have supervised your clinical training during the last two years of your employment or undergraduate training.
- One referee must be your current or most recent consultant or educational supervisor familiar with your clinical development.
- If you are applying for an Academic Clinical Fellowship post, one of your referees must be able to provide the academic reference.
- Please ensure these details are correct as you will be unable to begin in post until references are supplied and checked.
